Recession Porn and Robots…Just Another Momentum Monday… and Embrace VIX 1

You are lucky.

The majority of the world looks at a half filled glass of water and sees it as half empty, on the way to empty. My pal Barry Ritholtz was writing about ‘Recession Porn’ this weekend in the Washington Post. People can’t get enough of the misery and the end of the world. Of course, I am lucky, but it’s not my fault. It is not your fault you are optimistic and read this blog. You are lucky. You might even be ahead of the curve.

As an investor, you just need to be optimistic and you will win. When Greece or Turkey has you down, remember that happy place in the world where the VIX is always 10. Forget Cramer’s there is always a bull market somewhere. That is Wall Street 1.0 speak. You are not a bull or a bear. You are in search of big ideas, trends and Vix 1.

I learned in 2006 to finally stop reading smart people with negative bias. The market and tape will tell me when to get careful, even negative, but more reading will not make me more aware of ‘the end’.

Here is this week’s Stocktwits 50. It’s got everything from Restaurants, Machinery, Software, Internet, Retail and Financials. It might be hip to be bearish, but it has not been profitable. In the end, who knows or cares why…dips continue to be bought and bought aggressively. I took the time to dive deep into the robot trend that is picking up steam in private and public markets. From Marc Andreesen to $IRBT at all-time highs, money is flowing into robots.

Josh had a great chart up that shows the end of world trade #1,846,976.

As an optimist I am not making fun of the bears, just pointing out the problems with the thinking. While Wall Street may be rigged, it is rigged more for those that don’t take the time to dive deeper.

I don’t think that means ‘do the opposite’ as Costanza suggests:

I think Kramer is closer with ‘Serenity Now':

I would take it a step further and say: “Embrace ‘VIX 1′ as you head down the path of investing, but expect some ‘VIX 100’s’ along the way“.
