How Much Do You Really Know About Yourself?

Good morning

My friend Jim O’Shaughnessy shared this link titled ‘Your Greatest Fear Is Not Knowing Yourself’ and it rang very true to me.

As a kid in Toronto, I spent a lot of time alone. I never thought about whether it was normal or not normal.

In my teens I spent a lot time at comedy clubs.

We had a fantastic summer place in Muskoka, so I never went to summer camp with my friends and spent a lot of time alone fishing and golfing and reading and listening to music.

For the last 17 years I have been blogging. That is a lot of alone time with a keyboard.

Now I am 58 and as an empty nester can choose to spend time alone again. Ellen and I are both relearning how to do this and find a balance.

I really liked this little snippet (please read the whole article though):

If you want to live a happy and fulfilling life, it’s important to take the time to get to know yourself.

That means spending time alone, reflecting on your thoughts and feelings, and exploring your interests. It also means being honest with yourself about your strengths and weaknesses.

Once you know yourself, you can start making choices that align with your values and goals. You can also build stronger relationships and set boundaries that protect your time and energy.

I know from being 58 that knowing yourself does not mean you will always make great decisions. I spent almost 10 years as a hedge fund manager which in hindsight was a terrible choice considering everything I knew about myself.

There is no perfection to be attained, just awareness.

Have a great day.
