Stocktoberfest – The Agenda – Investing for Profit and Joy in 2013 and Beyond
You can sign up for the event here. Just 35 (of 200) tickets are remaining.
Today, I will outline the topics of conversations that you can expect to be covered at Stocktoberfest on the 25th ands 26th of October. There are a few open slots for late keynotes and special guests that I am working on to add even more depth for our few days. If you see a topic that we should be discussion, please chime in in the comments.
First off a special thanks to our sponsors which have really stepped up to help make this event a big one from the very start. We are very grateful.

To the Agenda:
1. Trends and Momentum
Ivan and I will walk people through the process of Trend and Momentum Investing. We built the Stocktwits 50 to help investors find the best ideas (or as I say, let the best ideas come to them). So many books have been written about the next part of the process including the besteller’ Finding the Next Starbucks’. It’s a great title for selling books, but we live by premise that Starbucks may be the next Starbucks, so the question is how do you hold the right stocks for the right amount of time. Finally, how do you exit stocks because in the end over 70 percent of stocks do a complete ’round-trip’ in price.
The hour plus session will be highly visual and interactive and you will be armed with tactics for doing it yourself and an easy way to connect with Ivan and I if you choose to pursue the strategy going forward. At the very least you will appreciate the power of momentum and trends and how these markets are connected to early stage investing and other areas of the market.
2. Price Pays
Two of my favorite people on the subject – Brian Shannon (Alphatrends) and JC Parets (All-Star Charts) will talk about the world of prices and technical analysis and how they look at the markets on a daily and weekly basis to position their portfolios and also do their best to paint a picture or two of 2013. Expect a very visual and eye opening discussion. I am sure Joe Fahmy will step in here with an example or two.
3. Investing Mistakes
Joe Fahmy will take the stage to cover his investing mistake rules and offer the most practical advice and practices to avoid them. Joe is a fantastic speaker on all things markets and is super passionate about investing and money management.
4. The Zero Percent Interest rate environment – How to Invest and How are Executives at Public Companies thinking about it.
We live in a very low interest rate environment and the government has told us to expect it for the forseeable future.
We have invited four talented executives including William Gurtin (Founder of $6 billion Gurtin Fixed Income), Gregory Garrabant (CEO of $BOFI a regional Bank stock that has exploded upwards), Paul Grinberg (CFO of $ECPG). Encore is a leading provider of debt management and recovery solutions for consumers and property owners across a broad range of assets. Also speaking is and Scott Ingraham, who has revolutionized the real estate industry many times as the founder of Rent.com (purchased by $EBAY) and now is a board member of several public companies including Camden ($CPT:NYSE), Kilroy ($KRC:NYSE) and Real Pages ($RP:NASDAQ).
I expect us all to walk away with a much clearer understanding of how rates affect all our investments and the outlook for interest rates, the banking industry and the real estate markets. I will make sure our guests offer up their strategies as well.
As an added bonus, Bill Gurtin will explain why California is NOT going bankrupt and better yet, how to profit if indeed it does fall into the Pacific.
5. Asset Allocation
The most important aspect of investing for the long haul and peace of mind is Asset Allocation. Josh Brown will take the lead here discussing all the ins and outs, the ups and downs he has witnessed over his carreer as a financial advisor. He is all about the plan, has seen all the darl sides of the business and is a great speaker on the subject.
6. Routines
Throughout the day we will touch on routines. All our invited speakers have had great success as investors in one way or another and we will delve into their daily routines (what they read, risk tolerances, strategies, advisors, tax)
I think what we will find is though routines differ, every successful investor hones their expertise around areas of expertise. I will share my routine and daily reading lists as well and we can create a master list for everyone to take home with them to study themselves.
7. Journalling
Members of our community will share success stories that began with journalling/self publishing their investment ideas, thoughts, trades, investments. We will discuss the range of tools, how they are used and how Stocktwits fits into their workflow as a journal. I guarantee that with just a Stocktwits account, your investing and trading can improve.
8. The Stocktwits Platform
Chris (our CTO), Justin (Head of Product) and I will spend a little time walking through the Stocktwits Platform and showing the power of our API with some new partners. Dan Schlieffer from ChartIQ will nake the first demo of an amazing integration of the Stocktwits API which should revolutionize the mobile viewing and sharing of charts and ideas. We will be interacting with the audience to discuss ways to expand the concentric circles of users that would benefit from the platform and the features that would be most appreciated by a wide audience.
9. New Products for Traders/Investors
There are so many great startups in the financial web space which are focused on disrupting news, global distribution, idea generation, fundamental information and charting. Dan Mirkin of TradeIdeas will demonstrate their powerful idea generation and protfolio management product. Shawn Carpenter, the founder of Ycharts and backed by Morningstar, will demo his product that is an amazing way to look at the fundamental data of any ticker or set of tickers. Noah Pepper is the founder of Lucky Sort. Lucky Sort provides tools that allow analysts to summarize large libraries of text data to reveal important trends generating trade ideas and helping users conduct research to inform their investments. Lucky Sort’s platform, TopicWatch, works on anything from tweets to SEC filings and news data. Jason raznick will tell us about his start-up Benzinga. Benzinga is a financial media company based out of Metro Detroit and currently serves over 3 million readers in over 125 countries every month. Benzinga provides daily original, accurate, and timely global content to the financial industry.
10. New Publishing Products from the founders – Videolicious, The New Hive, Rebel Mouse and Blayze are young companies positioned to benefit from the existing trends in social web and new media. We will get short demos from each founder and their vision for how they intend to further disrupt the publishing businesses of today.
11. The Years Ahead – Trends that are Evolving in Mobile, Publishing, Web Video, E-Commerce and the Financial Web
Guests for these interviews include Paul Berry (CTO of Huffington Post and now founder of Rebel Mouse), Michael Parekh (20 years at Goldman Sachs building the internet research team and firm) and Mike Hodges who is COO of the PROFITABLE U-T San Diego and knows a thing or two about the dilemmas and opportunities in publishing.
