Sunday Reads And Listens... Free Speech, Preferred Speech, Having A Soul and Goodbye Twitter
Good morning…
This has been the worst week for ‘Free Speech’ in the era of social media. I am sad and exhausted as I figure out a sane path forward.
The only places I personally have free speech on the internet is my newsletter/blog (email) and Stocktwits. On each, I know that my writing is seen by the people that opted in to see it.
After the sickness of this week I plan to leave Twitter for good. I have deleted the app from my phone and cancelled my ‘blue check’. I will be figuring out a best way to let my followers there know how best to find me this week and be gone. I need to sacrifice my free speech reach for my sanity and soul.
I am constantly repulsed by Elon Musk and his free speech rherotic has made me glad I never bought a Tesla and confident I never will. My wallet and attention is my only my free speech when it comes to Elon, so I need to make these changes.
Elon, like Jack Dorsey (who of course is missing in action…probably on a yoga retreat in Qatar) and the execs before him have hid behind their version of ‘free speech’ lies and I have had enough.
Speaking of Qatar and ‘free speech’, Qatar is one of the largest investors in Twitter and if you did not know, they hosted Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian met with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Doha, Qatar today.
Meanwhile, over the last few days on Twitter, the ‘free speech algo’ decided to serve me ads pitching me ‘Qatar Innovation’. No shame from the algo which executives hide behind. Qatar is a nation built on lucky geography, not innovation:
Petroleum and natural gas are the cornerstones of Qatar's economy and account for more than 70% of total government revenue, more than 60% of gross domestic product, and roughly 85% of export earnings. Qatar has the world's third largest proven natural gas reserve and is the second-largest exporter of natural gas.
They have used that ‘innovation’ to house terrorist leaders and fund terrorism.
Anyways...onward to some good uses and examples of free speech.
Here is a must watch of Marc Rowan talking about how awful leadership is at our college institutions , here Penn, who hide behind the term ‘free speech’ when it is in fact ‘preferred speech’:
Next up is Douglas Murray explaining why we need to treat UK and US Hamas supporters like ISIS. Douglas is NOT jewish:
Finally, NYC Mayor Adams:
I am sure all of these men are imperfect, but they chose to take a ‘layup’ when a layup was offered. There are only a few times in everyone’s life where you can use ‘Free Speech’ to show you have a heart and a soul. This last week was one.
I will end with a few emails from people I have never met ( I asked a few if I could share their name and they said yes) that read my newsletter this week and decided to reach out. For the record, I received ZERO ‘what abouts’ and ‘hate’. I think this proves what a layup this week was for real leaders and people with a heart AND soul to show themselves.
